wersja 27 biegówForum member LMMasterMariner (builder of 38 homemade tools) built this lathe headstock external gearbox, and then posted an updated version with more speeds and many plans files.
Adding an external gearbox makes a belt-driven lathe act like a geared head lathe, which means you get consistent torque at all speeds.
You also don't have to mess around with belts, pulleys, and a belt tensioner in order to change speeds.
LMMasterMariner did this build for around $100. You might pay a little more, depending on where you source the gear blanks. It's still a huge savings over buying a geared head lathe.
His original build was for a 12-speed gearbox, and the discussion includes a video showing construction and operation.
His second generation build has 27 speeds, and he also included 24 downloadable plans files with it.
