That brass shim solution actually makes sense as a practical fix, especially if the wobble is gone and the table still moves smoothly. If the dovetail itself has a consistent gap on the solid side, it may be more of a geometry or fit issue than just a gib adjustment problem. Tightening the gib will only help so much before it starts binding, which sounds exactly like what you’re experiencing.

I’d probably keep the shim in place for now, check that it doesn’t shift over time, and monitor wear after a few hours of use. Remachining would be the proper long-term fix, but for the kind of work you mentioned, it may not be worth the cost unless the accuracy becomes a real problem.
