A breakthrough has been achieved by virtue of a new laser fusion unit: “Using the additive fusion method, we were able to reduce repair times for defective turbine burners in medium-sized turbines from around 40 to just 4 weeks,” says Graichen with obvious pride. This success story with the additive manufacturing process, often referred to in practice as 3D printing, is due to a large degree to the efforts of EOS, a specialist technologies company based in Krailling near Munich. A joint team of developers in the Siemens plant in Finspång, Sweden were involved in adapting a standard EOS machine to meet the special requirements.
Siemens utilizes for the construction of the turbine burner with its filigree channel structures EOS's “Nickel Alloy HX” material, which is ideally suited for repair work. The nickel-based powdered substance is for instance capable of withstanding the high temperatures to which gas turbines are constantly exposed. Excellent collaborators such as these also come together on the exhibition stand at the “Supplier Innovation Day”. “We and our partners at EOS have been operating as a well-established team for some years now,” says Graichen.
